Please remove your cars from guest parking places, take in delicate ground ornaments, potted plants, etc.

The Lakeport Board

Updating Standards

The Board is preparing five (5) DRB applications for Decks, House Numbers, Screen/Storm Doors, Siding, and windows.  Please review the documents, videos and subsequent discussion items on our PROPOSED CHANGES page.  Feel free to comment at the bottom of the page.

Snow Update

We're expecting an additional 10-20 inches of snow today.  At this point, Genesis hopes to plow the upcoming snow, but their resources have been crippled.  Lakeport Cluster needs your help to keep the roads cleared!

  • Do not shovel snow into the street!  Uneven surfaces and ice lumps brake plows, and spare parts are nearly impossible to obtain.

  • Build snow piles closer to the house than the road.  Plow trucks are wider than our vehicles, and narrow paths prevent the trucks from getting through.

  • Park in your garages and driveways; avoid Guest Parking.  To help prevent blocked driveways, we've authorized Genesis to move snow to Guest Parking areas.

  • If you know of any contractor that can handle snow service today, please forward their information to Board@LakeportCluster.org.

  • We may need to organize a rescue crew tomorrow.  If you're available to help dig the community from the snow, please let us know at Board@LakeportCluster.org.

Know that Genesis completely understands our frustration.  They were better prepared for this winter than ever before, but they have had an overwhelming amount of difficulty fighting this snow.  Many of their trucks and equipment are down, and the tractors they hoped to obtain to help dig their properties out have been assigned to State work.

While we're all inconvenienced by mother nature, we need to keep things in perspective.  We have electricity and access to Sunrise Valley Drive.  I've attached some RA snow information.  Note that VDOT tries to "make at least one pass over lower priority routes, including subdivision streets, within 48 hours after the storm stops," and they've been having trouble keeping up.  Please be patient; we will get through this.

Snow Update

According to WTOP radio, this is the largest snowfall for the Washington metro area ever recorded, with Dulles Airport reporting 32.4 inches.

Genesis drivers desperately moved the snow to open the roads to give us access to Sunrise Valley Drive. We don't have much space to pile snow, so many people will have lots of digging out to do. They apologize for any cars and driveways blocked in, but please understand that this was the best they could do with 30" of snow.

Genesis hopes to line up tractors and will work through the week to widen the roads and clear blocked areas, but since tractors are in high demand, it may be a few days. Once the plow work is done, Genesis will sand, but we've asked them to sand the Lakespray and entrance hills.

Today's relatively warm and sunny weather helps to melt the snow, but that makes it heavier and harder to move. Nonetheless, it might be a good idea to clear your drives now before they ice over.

Also, a number of people have fallen tree limbs. Genesis will be able to help us clear them once our snow crisis is resolved. If you have specific requests, please contact Michelle at michelle.k.kinch@gmail.com to be added to a list.

Please be patient during this historical time.

Winter Snow

Snow removal crews started in the middle of the night and should be done clearing the 4-6" of snow from our streets and parking areas. Don't expect sanding, because most areas uncovered old sand. With 40 degrees today, things should get better not worse.

According to Accuweather.com, there is a significant snowfall facing us again Friday into Saturday. We could be facing measurements similar to Decembers "big storm" (15-18"). If we get hit with another "big one" this week, Genesis knows what needs done based on lessons learned from then.

Before we know it, you will be seeing us cutting green grass around flowering trees.

Holiday Decorations

We'd like to thank everyone that participated in the Holiday Spirit with lights, caroling, etc.!  With your help, the Cluster looked very cheerful and seemed to "warm up" this holiday season, but it's time to face 2010.

As a reminder, the Lakeport Handbook's Section II (Cluster Rules and Traditional Customs & Courtesies) requires that all "Winter holiday lighting and decorations [...] be removed by January 15th."  If you haven't already removed your decorations, please plan to this week.

Lakeport Caroling

You are cordially invited to celebrate the holidays with Caroling at Linda & Rich Rosenberg’s home on Sunday, December 13th. For details, please view their invite.

Standards Meeting

Date: Wednesday Nov 4, 2009

Time: 7 – 9 PM

The Lakeport Cluster Association is forming the 2009‐2010 Standards Committee. If you are interested in volunteering your time to establish the next phase of standards updates and reviews, please join now. This committee will be responsible for reviewing, researching, writing, and finalizing approval through Reston Association’s (RA) Design Review Board (DRB).

We are pleased to announce that since there have been no content changes, the revised Awning and Garage Door Standards have been approved by RA. That’s only the beginning though. The following Standards need revision: Outdoor lighting, House numbers, Colors, Decks - Trex in front?, Storm doors, Siding, Windows, Roofing, and more!

Please RSVP your interest to James Pan at jpamco@yahoo.com

Graffiti Update

You might have noticed some unsightly graffiti or "tagging" on cluster property (power/phone boxes between Lakespray and South Lakes and the east entrance fence) in the past few months.  The incidents have been reported to the police and will be cleaned up.  Unfortunately, this type of thing will likely continue, so we'd like to find a long-term solution.  If you have suggestions, please write to us!

Street cleaning scheduled for April 28th!

The Board has scheduled the spring street/parking lot clean up on April 28th to clear out the winter sand and most of spring's tree blossoms.  Genesis will blow sand and debris from all curbs and around vehicles on all parking areas toward the street, then vacuum the street for final removal.

Due to possible vehicle damage, they will not blow under cars.  Therefore, to make sure that you get the most from the clean up, be sure to move your cars on April 28th!

NEW - Reston Landscape Restrictions

Reston passed a new rule that prohibits the use of the following ten items on any property in Reston. If these items are installed and Reston takes notice, the property will be cited and the items will have to be removed.

  • Flowering Pear Tree (Bradford and all family)

  • Burning Bush

  • Japanese Barberry

  • Bamboo

  • English Ivy

  • Oriental Bittersweet

  • Wisteria

  • Bush Honeysuckle

  • White stone/rock

  • Colored mulch

Visit Reston.org for details and to be aware of any other changes before starting a new landscape. We certainly would not want to see hard earned money wasted.

TGIF

Holly and James Pan are hosting the TGIF Party from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM at 1983 Lakeport Way on Friday, January 9, 2009. Plan to attend and join your neighbors in celebrating the new year.

2008 Standards Violations Update

Your new Board has taken on the task of working with the Reston Association (RA) to sort out the violations issues reported in Summer 2008.  The next step was to report all existing violations to Reston for escalation, yet we've found that by doing so, we open ourselves to much stricter scrutiny.  Unfortunately, our Cluster Standards aren't 100% iron clad, so RA has asked us to update our standards before we escalate.  We're hoping to run a revision by you late this winter so that we can get them approved by RA this Spring.  By that time, improved weather should facilitate addressing most violations more easily.

Sorry for the delay.
