Lakeport Residents running the Boston Marathon

This message was scheduled to be sent out last night but due to the senseless act yesterday, we waited until today to congratulate Marcy Foster (1999 Lakeport Way) and Ian Griffin (1966 Lakeport Way) for running the Boston Marathon which is 26 miles, 385 yards (42.195 Kilometers). Our hearts go out to those affected yesterday by the two explosions. We are so pleased that Marcy and Ian are safe.

Marcy grew up in the Boston area and posted a time of 3 hours 59 minutes and 19 seconds. Marcy said, “I love running marathons and this was my 3rd Boston running through my hometown of Natick. I had just run through the finish line when the explosions went off, and it was mass confusion. Thank you all for your concern and visits with Charles while he waited to hear from me. We have a great community and I hope we all get together again soon.” She was interviewed by the FBI because of her proximity to the explosions.  She said the people at the airport were incredible.  Anyone wearing a marathon jacket and/or a medal was sent through the express security line and strangers offered to buy Marcy a meal.  Her family and running friends are all okay.

Ian posted a time of 3 hours 30 minutes and 19 seconds. Ian said, "I was very fortunate to have completed the run prior to the explosions. It is a very sad time for the City of Boston which does a wonderful job of putting on a first class marathon. My thoughts are with the injured and their families who were traumatized by this tragedy." Ian we completely agree with your thoughts.

These are two of the nicest people that live at Lakeport. They participate in many Lakeport events and both have recently hosted TGIF parties. We are proud of both of you and so glad that you are both OK!

Have a great week!

Beware…Check your Outside Faucets

Yesterday, Lakeport Residents woke up to a flooded lower level in their home. This was caused by a pipe to the outside rear faucet that burst due to the cold weather. They were fortunate that the damage was limited and most of the water went outside their home. They were also lucky it wasn’t the pipe to the front outside faucet and they were home this weekend.  In either case, they could have had a lot more damage.

The homeowners knew where the shut off valve was located and turned off the water to both the front and rear outside faucets and purged the water from the pipes. Please learn from their mistake and weatherize those pipes/faucets at your home! We would hate for any of you to needlessly face this mess and anxiety.

Here are the steps to winterize your outside faucets.

  1. Locate and turn off the shut off valve for the pipe to the outside faucets. The shut off valve should be near the main line coming into your home.

  2. Open the outside faucets. This will help to drain the water.

  3. If you have a hose, make sure it’s detached from the faucet. Try to remove any water from the hose so it won’t split.

  4. Leave the faucets open. Any water left in the lines that freezes will have a place to go.

  5. If you have a problems or not sure what to do contact the Board at board@lakeportcluster.org . We will help.

Have a great week--stay warm and dry!

A Couple of Items

Second Leaf Pick-up

On Wednesday December 5th, Genesis, our landscaper, is scheduled to make the final leaf pick-up for this season. Weather conditions or delays at other communities may change the date to Thursday December 6th. Genesis will pick-up the leaves from common areas that include streets, parking spaces, sidewalks, mulched areas, and grass areas. They will not pick-up leaves from wooded areas or homeowners’ property. This weekend the weather should be good for removing the remaining leaves from your property. Please bag these leaves and put them out with the trash on Monday or Thursday. Do not rake the leaves into the wooded areas. Those piles could create a home for unwanted pests in the common areas.

December Holiday Decoration Contest

The holiday season has started and Lakeport residents (once again) are decorating their homes. We would like to announce the “December Holiday Decoration Contest”. We will ask residents to judge the Lakeport homes during the weekend before December 24th. You have plenty of time to add a couple of strings of lights, blow-up Santa’s or anything to help win the biggest contest of the year. Already, many homeowners have started decorating their homes or will take advantage of this weekend’s warm weather. But that doesn’t mean you can’t create new ideas or more lights that could put your home over the top. During December, you may want to walk around our community and checkout the competition. Last year (every year), one homeowner had an alligator pulling Santa’s sleigh on their roof. We had boats with lights, holiday tunes playing every night and tons of lights but we could always have more this year!

Reston National Golf Course

The owners of Reston National Golf Course want to create a residential area to replace the golf course. As you know, the golf course is on Sunrise Valley and would add a lot of additional homes. Many Reston residents and Reston Association are trying to stop this action and save the green space. If you want to learn more about this situation please go to www.reston.org on the home page look to the left side under Quick Links, Golf Course Zoning Appeals Updates. If you want to get involved, you have many options. Here is an easy option. Reston resident, Lisa White mail@change.org started this petition "Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals, Virginia: Stop the proposed development of Reston National Golf Course in Reston, VA," which you can sign (if you want too!) on Change.org. http://www.change.org/petitions/fairfax-county-board-of-zoning-appeals-virginia-stop-the-proposed-development-of-reston-national-golf-course-in-reston-va-3?utm_source=supporter_message&utm_medium=email They have had a great response since starting this targeted petition drive on November 17th. They have set a new goal for 3,500 signatures by December 9th. You can follow their actions on www.facebook.com/RescueReston for updates.

Lakeport Activities

Leaf Pick-up – On Monday November 12th, our landscaper, Genesis, will pick-up the leaves at Lakeport. By contract, we have two leaf pick-up’s each year. The second will be in early December. Leaves are picked-up on common areas only. This includes all grass areas, roads, common parking areas and areas that are mulched each year. This means that they don’t pick-up leaves from wooded areas or private homeowner’s areas. Since they use blowers to move the leaves to larger piles for pick-up, make sure you secure any loose items that are near the common area. Please don’t place any leaves in the woods. Please pick-up your leaves and place them in bags. You can then place them out with your trash or you can put your leaves on the street (by the curb without the bags) by Monday morning. They will be picked-up by Genesis.

New Neighbors at the Shopping Center – There are two new businesses moving into the South Lakes Shopping Center. Opening very soon is YogiBerry. This is a self serve frozen yogurt store. You can learn more by going to their website www.yogiberry.com. They currently have 11 locations with the closest at the Reston Town Center. They are located at the old Verizon store. Opening in January is Chipotle Mexican Grill. They have over 1,350 stores and you can learn more from their website at www.chipotle.com. They will are located next to the Foot Steps of Reston.

Flood Insurance – Lakeport Cluster is not designated as a flood plain area so we aren’t required to have flood insurance but we live next to a Lake. We all saw the effects of Sandy which has some homeowners asking about flood insurance. One Lakeport homeowner has a policy that costs $450 per year. You can find more information at http://www.floodsmart.gov/floodsmart/pages/residential_coverage/oneStepFloodRiskAddressSearch.action

Monthly Board Meeting – The Lakeport Board meets every month. The date and location for the most current Board meeting is posted on the Lakeport website at www.lakeportcluster.org . The November meeting is on the 15th at 8PM at 1909 Lakeport Way. Please RSVP (board@lakeportcluster.org) if you want to discuss an issue or attend.

Ripples – Lakeport has a newsletter called Ripples. Joy Myers (new homeowner/Board member) has taken responsibility to oversee Ripples. Newsletters can be a very valuable communications tool for a community. Joy is asking for volunteers to form a community club (committee) to work together on the newsletter. This could be a great way to help your community and have some fun.  If you have an interest in helping to create Ripples, please contact Joy at secretary@lakeportcluster.org

Hope you all have a great weekend.

The Lakeport Board

Preparation for “Sandy”

As we all prepare for the upcoming storm, here are a couple of items that are important for Lakeport Residents.

Today, Lakeport volunteers have cleared the leaves near the street drains. We don’t want the drains to clog-up with leaves! You can help by keeping any leaves you sweep or rake up out of the street. You can bag those leaves for American Disposal to pick-up or just wait for our landscaper for the first of two leaf pick-up days on November 12th. If you want to clear your walk and/or driveway, place the leaves on the common area lawns before the pick-up. Our landscaper  will pick-up the leaves on your driveway.

The projected rain and wind could cause some damage and/or loss of services. We have tried to properly trim our trees but we could have some damage. Please let us know immediately.  Please make sure everything is tied down or moved inside that could be picked up by the wind. Here are the Lakeport contacts if you need help or see a problem. Please email the board (board@lakeportcluster.org) or call David MacWhorter at 703-774-7549.

There are many sources to help you prepare for this storm. Here is a good site http://www.ready.gov/. Currently, American Disposal will pick-up trash Monday but you can check for updates at http://www.americandisposal.com/weatherboard.php. Fairfax County Schools are closed Monday and Tuesday.

Please be careful if you must go out during the storm. Let’s check on our neighbors that may need help and let us know if you need help or see a problem.

The Lakeport Board

New Written Complaint Process

Lakeport has a new written complaint process. Virginia passed a new law that requires all Homeowner Associations to provide homeowners/residents a documented complaint process. Please review the attached Resolution H to our Handbook and the Complaint Form. The procedures and requirements for handling complaints and the Complaint Form are also located at the Lakeport Website. On the Lakeport home page (www.lakeportcluster.org) look at the left side under Lakeport Information and click on “Complaint Process”.

The Board encourages owners and residents to resolve their issues between themselves before initiating formal procedures that involve the Board and its Managing Agent (SCS).  If a satisfactory resolution cannot be obtained, complaints shall be made in writing to the Managing Agent and must include a citation to the pertaining provision(s) in the Association's Declaration, Bylaws, or Rules and Regulations along with specific allegations of fact in evidence that the Owner or Resident has violated the particular provision(s). If you have any questions, please contract our Community Manager Cindy Chau at CChau@scs-management.com or 703-631-2003.

During the Annual meeting three homeowners Richard Laeser, Joy Myers and David MacWhorter were voted on the Board. We want to thank the four people that volunteered to run for the three Board positions. To keep Lakeport a great community we need a strong group of volunteers. We also want to thank Lani Seeley and Chuck Foster for the two years that they were on the Board. Lani spent many hours researching for a new Property Management Company and helped establish better financial reports. Chuck also spent many hours as Secretary and helped to improve our Standards.

Have a great weekend,

Big Lakeport Weekend on September 21st to 24th

Summer will soon be over and hopefully the hot humid weather. We have scheduled a big weekend at Lakeport. Make sure you join all the events.

We will start off on Friday night September 21st with another famous Lakeport TGIF party. These parties are always a lot of fun. This is a great way to meet new neighbors, says hello (in person) to those people you wave to in their cars, and reconnect with a lot of great Lakeport residents. Our hosts for this party are brand new Lakeport homeowners. Tom Barnett and Joy Myer live at 1955 Lakeport Way. The party will be from 6:30 to 9PM. Please bring a beverage and snack and get ready to have a great time with two very nice people. Tom and Joy have a dog and cat, in case you have allergies. See you there.

On Saturday morning, September 22 we will have the Lakeport Community Wide Yard Sale. This is a great opportunity to clear out all that extra stuff in your home. We would like a couple more residents to join us by having a yard sale. It’s a lot of fun and you will have more room in your home. More information to come!

On Monday evening, we will have our Annual meeting at 7PM. The Lakeport By-Laws state that this year three Board members’ positions are open. To keep the Lakeport Community a great place to live, we need a strong Board. It is also important to have all five positions on the Board filled, not just to share the Board workload (a couple of hours a month) but to provide the ideas to keep the value of our community. As homeowners, we have a responsibility to this community. Please make the decision to run for a Board position. Send us an email at board@lakeportcluster.org and say I’ll run for the Board.

We wish everyone a very happy Labor Day weekend.

Lakeport became “WoodStock” on Saturday evening!

On May 19th Lakeport was transformed by an evening of music for all ages. We had a great group of people that enjoyed the live band and spending time with neighbors. We have received a lot of positive feedback and want to thank those responsible for this event.

The Babbitt production company was responsible for the creation and managing this event. We thank Kathy Babbitt (1923 Lakeport Way) and Sandy Laeser (1977 Lakeport Way). Great idea, great planning, great set-up and a great event, Thanks!

The band BACK-N-TIME was a big reason why this night was so successful. They are true professionals that know how to cater their music to their audience and are just darn good! Plus, they really do know how to enjoy themselves! We want to thank them for volunteering their time. If you know anyone that needs a live band, tell them about BACK-N-TIME.  I’m sure they would like to be paid and will make any event special. Dan Kilcup (1917 Lakeport Way) is the drummer for BACK-N-TIME plus a Lakeport Board member. We appreciate all your efforts, Dan. If you would like to see some pictures of Saturday night go to www.dankilcup.com. Click on the music tab and go to the bottom right of the music page. This website will also provide information on Dan’s many talents and how to contact BACK-N-TIME for a booking.

We are happy that so many residents enjoyed our Saturday evening event.  This is just one more reason why it is so special to live at Lakeport Cluster.

The Lakeport Board

This Saturday Night at Lakeport!

Lakeport will have our first “Street Dance” on Saturday night May 19th. All residents and their friends are invited to attend. We have a live band that will play from 7:30 to 10PM. The band is BACK-N-TIME and the drummer is our neighbor Dan Kilcup (1917 Lakeport Way). We thank them for volunteering their time to entertain us.

The band will set up next to Triangle Park. Bring your chairs, blankets, food and drinks of choice but most importantly please join us for a fun night. The weather forecast is excellent, prefect for dancing or listening to some great music. What a great way to spend a Saturday evening!

We will block the common area parking spaces on the lakeside of Triangle Park. We ask that all cars be moved from these common area parking spaces by 5PM this Saturday. The spaces will open up after 11PM Saturday night. Signs have been posted in this area. Any cars that are still in these common area spaces after 5PM will be subject to towing. We thank everyone for their cooperation.

We hope to see you Saturday night.

Lakeport Cluster – 2011 Neighborhood Association of the Year

On March 28, 2012, at Reston Association’s “Spring Fling” Annual Meeting for Neighborhood Association Board Members, Lakeport Cluster was awarded the 2011 Neighborhood Association of the Year. This award was given for our work on Triangle Park. We want to thank everyone for their participation in revitalizing our park.

Reston has been giving this award every year since 2001. There are over 130 Homeowner Associations in Reston. Lakeport is the only cluster to win this award two times. We won in 2007 for the landscaping and lighting upgrades.

It is very nice to be recognized by Reston as Neighborhood Association of the year. This just confirms what we already know. Lakeport is a great community!

The next great event at Lakeport is coming!

Easter Egg Hunt on April 8th at 10 AM meeting at Triangle Park. If you want to volunteer to help the Easter Bunny meet at 9AM at Triangle Park. All eggs are plastic with treats inside. If you want to bring additional eggs that is OK but not needed. We always start with the youngest children first but kids of all ages are invited.  All residents’ children, grandchildren and friends are invited.

Happy New Year!

We want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year. With all the changes in 2011, some so wonderful, some so sad, we can count our blessings to live in such a great community. We said hello to new neighbors and bye to others and you still won’t find a nicer group of people. May all your wishes and hopes come true in 2012 and together we will have another great year at Lakeport.

Congratulations to George and Susan at 1944 Lakeport Way for winning the “December Holiday Decoration Contest”.

Happy Holidays

We want to wish everyone Happy Holidays. Once again, Lakeport is a blaze of Holiday lights. No matter your religious belief, just pulling into our community has to warm your heart.

Starting now until Sunday night, we ask everyone to vote for the “December Holiday Decoration Contest” winner. To be a judge is very easy and you will have a great time. The best way to judge the winner is a quick and fun walk around our community. Once it’s dark, stroll around Lakeport. Don’t forget Lakespray or the trail near the common dock. There are some nice decorations on the homes facing the common dock.

Some people walk with neighbors, some with friends or others make it a family event. You will have a great time trying to select the winners. We ask you to select your top three winners. No rules. Just choose who you think was 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Email your results to board@lakeportcluster.org.

The winner has bragging rights for the year and a gift certificate to a local restaurant. In a way, we are all winner because Lakeport makes your winter holiday a little brighter. We thank those that decorated their home. You have brought a smile to all of us.

Fact of the Day.

Lake Thoreau has a normal maximum depth of 38 feet with a water volume of 26.5 million gallons.

We wish everyone a great weekend.

December Holiday Decoration Contest

The holiday season has started and Lakeport residents (once again) have decorated their homes. We would like to announce the “December Holiday Decoration Contest”. We ask residents to judge the Lakeport homes during the weekend of December 24th. You still have time to add a couple of strings lights, blow-up Santa’s or anything to help win the biggest contest of the year.

Already, many homeowners have decorated their homes (taking advantage of the warm weather) but that doesn’t mean you can’t add those creative ideas that could put your home over the top. You may want to walk around our community and checkout the competition. How many communities have an alligator pulling Santa’s sleigh? Is that Santa’s hat in the alligator’s mouth? We have boats with lights, holiday tunes playing every night and tons of lights but we could always have more!

This is the best time of the year and Lakeport is making it even more festive with our decorations. We thank those that have brightened our lives and our community.

Fact of the Day

The winners of the Halloween contest were the Fleischer’s at 1953 Lakeport Way. Congratulations!

Fact of Day

The Origin of Halloween

Halloween's roots can be traced back to Celtic culture in Ireland. According to their "Druid" religion, November 1st was New Years' on their calendar. The celebration would begin on October 31st, and last into the following day. The spirits of all who died in the prior year would rise up and roam the earth on this night.

2011 Annual Meeting

On Monday night September 26th, Lakeport held their 2011 Annual meeting. Lakeport’s By-laws require 20% of homeowners attend or be represented by proxy for a quorum. We had 31 Lakeport residents attend the meeting and with proxies, 47 homeowners were represented at the meeting. We thank all that attended or provided a proxy.

The presentation will be placed on the Website (www.lakeportcluster.org) under Meeting Minutes. If you have any questions, feel free to email the Board at board@lakeportcluster.org. We want to thank the volunteers for helping with the meeting. They include Terrill Evon at 1928 Lakeport Way for checking in, verifying the quorum and certifying the election results, Marilyn Bursch and Lani Seeley for providing treats and drinks for everyone. Special thanks to the group at Member Services Reston Association. They set up the conference room and provided AV support at no cost to Lakeport.

During the meeting, we announced the Summer Landscaping winners. This summer, residents voted in July and September for the top two landscaped homes. Lakeport had a lot of great competitors and the front of our homes never looked better. We thank everyone for making our community look so great. Plus, thanks to everyone that took the time to vote. Bragging rights go to the winners. We take our hats off to you!

2011 Summer Landscaping Contest

Before the meeting, we held an election for two open Board positions. Board Members are voted to a two year term. One year two positions are open and the next year three positions are open. When possible this allows continuity for the Board. We thank these homeowners for volunteering to run for the Board. We congratulate the two winners.

Tonight's movie is postponed!

Tonight’s movie is postponed due to increment weather. The movie has been rescheduled for Friday August 25th.

We have been told that there are two reasons for this postponement. First, it seems the weather man has gone to the dark side! Secondly, we need the rain and we all know if we schedule a movie night, it will rain!

Have a nice weekend.
